Cleaning up the fridge is by no means my favourite activity but a necessary one. In our home, we try our best to clean out our refrigerator once a month. It helps us keep track of expiry dates and what is left behind. I do enjoy the process for the sake of keeping track of our habits and helping us avoid foods waste. The more ways to save on waste the better in my book. For my #organizeoctober event, I’ve come up with an easy-to-follow 15 step process to deep clean and organize my fridge that I’m going to share with you today.

Over the years I have tried to test out a lot of different diets and routines to see which fit best with my lifestyle. When I adopted a zero waste lifestyle two years ago, I realized I needed to consider the greater impact of my food choices. Not only did I want to prioritize my mental and physical health by eating well, but I also needed to adjust my habits to reduce the amount of waste I was producing in my kitchen.

For compiling this list, I used Good For You’s awesome search ratings to help determine which were worth being included and which to leave out. In all honestly I was really surprised to see many of the more commonly known ‘sustainable brands’ here in Canada that needed to be kept off. My list of 30 was quickly dwindled down to 18 as I searched each to find the majority of them listed as ‘not good enough’.

In the last year, I have tried hard to find the best ways to make our split entry, detached, 1989 home more sustainable.I requested quotes from over 30 companies to get an average price for the sustainable solutions we found locally. Although I am not allowed to disclose their names and the specifics of the quotes, I can give you an estimate on how much it costs on average to get thermostats, heat pumps, solar panels, a metal roof and an electric car.

As Zero waste is becoming a more prevalent discussion and more companies are focusing on sustainability, there is more and more technology in development. The news coverage of the current climate crisis is also waking a lot more people up to the urgency of solutions. It is wonderful to see more people interested in learning about these innovations. The technology in this domain is leading to a huge shift in consumer thinking and expectations.

Shopping is a habit that can be hard to change over the course of your zero waste journey. Supermarkets have everything conveniently in one place but often do not take into consideration zero waste adopters and their need for plastic free grocery shopping. Being intentionally more sustainable while zero waste shopping takes a little bit more preparation and awareness of your food choices.

There were tons of media outlets covering all the attendees looks from head to toe and what made them great or a miss. Whether or not you like it, the pedestal placed on this fashion and the attention on trends impacts the entire industry of fashion.

After starting my zero-waste journey I decided to swap out a lot of my houseware items for better quality, reusable, and longer lasting options. Right from the outset, silicone seemed like a great replacement for a lot of single-use plastic items around my home — especially in the kitchen. It seemed to be the default heat safe, food grade alternative to a lot of cheap plastic tools but if I’m being totally honest I didn’t know much about the material beyond that.
